Shoe Moulding and Cladding

SHOE MOULDING
Now available in three styles – Standard, PanelGrip™, and Low Profile – and two hole configurations – counterbored and countersunk. Produced from extruded aluminum, they may be anodized, painted or clad to match the cap railing or area decor. Shoe Moulding may be surface mounted, fascia mounted or embedded in concrete. The shoe is the key to the structural integrity glass railing system.

Proper attachment is extremely important. Tempered glass is set in the shoe moulding using either a wet glaze or either of two dry glaze options, PanelGrip™ and GlassWedge™ .

HOLE CONFIGURATIONS:
  • 12" on center beginning 6" from the end:
    • Countersunk Holes are drilled for 1/2" flat head, socket head screws for attachment to tapped steel substrate.
    • Counterbored Holes are for 3/8" x 4" Wedge-Bolt anchors for attachment to concrete

Building Code Note regarding Glass Railing:
IBC 2407.1.2 states: Each handrail or guard section shall be supported by a minimum of three glass balusters or shall be supported to remain in place should one baluster panel fail. Glass balusters shall not be installed without an attached handrail or guard.
It is critical to also note the preceding note in the IBC:
IBC 2407.1.1 Loads. The panels and their support system shall be designed to withstand the loads specified in section 1607.7. A safety factor of 4 shall be used.
Per IBC 1607.7, the requirements are for a 50 pound per foot uniform load or 200 pound concentrated load applied at any point along the top of the railing. Glass balusters will not be able to meet the 800 (4 times 200) pound concentrated load without a Cap Rail. Also, the Cap Rail used to set on top of the glass guard must be able to withstand the load requirements on its own.
In an end condition, if the Cap Rail is not affixed to the structure, the load requirement may limit the width of the end panel since the cantilever stress on the Cap Rail needs to be taken into account.
The 2009 IBC has been changed to allow for the installation of Glass Railing without a Cap Rail if laminated, tempered or heat strengthened glass is used. Confirm requirements with your local authorities.

RECOMMENDED ATTACHMENT OPTIONS
Take care to properly align cladding before pressing into place.
1. Apply two rows of tape to the vertical face of the cladding and apply a
silicone bead between the rows.
2. Apply three rows of tape to the vertical face of the cladding. 3. Apply silicone to the vertical face of the
cladding. Use clamps to hold the cladding in place until the silicone cures
