Ramp handrails extend horizontally above the landing for 12 inches minimum beyond the top and bottom of the ramp runs.

Top Extension on Stairs – Handrails extend horizontally above the landing for 12 inches minimum beginning directly above first riser nosing.

Bottom Extension on Stairs – Handrails extend at the slope of the stair flight for a horizontal distance equal to one tread depth beyond the last riser nosing

Note: This is a relatively recent change. Some jurisdictions still require a tread depth plus 12″ beyond the last riser nosing

Extensions are measured based on continuously grippable area. Curved sections and radii are not to be included in the measurement.

Always confirm with local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to confirm applicability of any building code requirement.
