    ADA Update

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law in 1990. It applies to facilities in the private sector and to state and local government facilities. The ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) was created in 1991; revised in 1994 and updated in 2004. However, six years after the 2004 update, the Department of Justice has yet to approve the new ADAAG.

While the ADAAG is not a building code, many jurisdictions have adopted it into their local accessibility standards. Unfortunately, some of these are still using the 1991 version and requiring all railing to be 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches diameter with a clearance of 1-1/2 inches between the wall and handrail.
On the other hand, the Accessible Barriers Act (ABA) -- which applies to federal facilities -- has approved the 2004 ADA and ABA Accesibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities. This applies to postal, military and other federal facilities. Federal housing approval is still pending.
Unfortunately, you will continue to see the incorrect dimensional requirements for handrail in specifications for some time. Note however that the Access Board -- the agency which oversees the ADAAG -- considers the 2004 update their answer to all questions regarding the original 1991 ADAAG. Festivus in a Box

Just in time for the upcoming holiday season, The Wagner Companies has announced the availability of their latest product - Festivus in a Box™.

Festivus in a Box includes a 7/8 inch diameter by 8-1/2 inch long aluminum, mini Festivus Pole with collapsible base; six Festivus post cards; an Airing of Grievances form, and a copy of Allen Salkin's book, Festivus, The Holiday for the Rest of Us.

The Wagner Companies first began producing full size and table top Festivus Poles® in 2005. Since then, Wagner has sold approximately 15 tons of aluminum pipe -- known for its high strength to weight ratio.

"While the 6 foot Festivus Pole remains very popular, we found that many people didn't have room for our larger Festivus Pole and were interested in a smaller version for use in their office or as a center piece at their holiday dinner", reports  Tony Leto. "Festivus in a Box provides a simple solution while providing all the accoutrements and information someone would need to celebrate the Holiday for the Rest of Us."

    Festivus Poles Incorporated

Reprinted from Festivus, The Holiday for the Rest of Us, 2nd Edition, by Allen Salkin.

It is not fair to say that the most boring job in the world is manufacturing stairway railings, but let's just say that it is a profession which could benefit from a little goosing up. Festivus is a world class gooser.

One day, when Tony Leto was sitting around the offices of The Wagner Companies, a railing manufacturer in Milwaukee, he read an article about the spread of Festivus, a holiday which requires straight lengths of aluminum.

"We make straight lengths of aluminum," Mr. Leto, the executive vice president of sales and marketing thought. He met with his boss, "I told him," Mr. Leto recalls, "'We're not going to make a fortune, but we're going to have fun and get a little attention.'"

They bought the domain name festivuspoles.com. Research and development followed. A product emerged. The full-sized model, an unpolished six-foot pole with a snap-together base. . .[and a] table-top model. . .

The governor of Wisconsin, Jim Doyle, a Seinfeld fan, proudly posed with his Wagner pole that year and donated it to the Wisconsin Historical Museum in 2006.

    Glass Railing Questions Continue

In last November's Pipeline, we included an article that asked the question, Is a Top Railing Required for Glass Railing?. It was hoped that some consistency would would come to pass on this issue but problems remain.

Per the International Code Council (ICC) interpretation, a rail is required on top of a guard in a glass railing installation and that top rail must be able to withstand the required loads should one of the minimum of three panels fail. The 2009 codes do permit the elimination of a top rail if the balusters are laminated, tempered glass.

Despite this, glass railing installations are being approved for applications across the country without a top rail. One state has actually gone so far as to take the position that a handrail attached to a guard is enough to meet the code requirement.

At the recent ICC code hearings in Baltimore, a code proposal was introduced wherein the 4 X safety factor for glass railings would be clarified to only apply to the glass. At the public hearing, an engineer spoke in opposition to the proposal claiming that it was not necessary to change the code since the 4 X safety factor is never enforced anyway. While the logic of that statement misses us completely, the committee voted down the change for lack of supporting documentation. It will be resubmitted for review by the ICC membership.

So while we thought this issue had been clarified, it is not. Always check with your local authority having jurisdiction to confirm the interpretation of this and any other building code issue.

J.G. Braun Collection at Metal Museum

After immigrating to America from Germany in the late 1800’s Jacob G Braun arrived in Chicago, where he opened an ornamental metals business in 1887. Around the turn of the 20th century he began supplying seamless metal tubing to the Schwinn bicycle company. This proved to be quite profitable for both companies, and soon Braun was able to begin producing elaborate metal ornaments, railings, and fences, which became a sensation in the Victorian and Art Deco buildings of the “gay 90’s.”

The company continued to grow in the 20th century, even as the Great Depression dampened the economic climate. Braun flourished by producing innovative products, such as prefabricated wrought iron storefronts, that suited the changing American lifestyle. With the advent of WWII, the tide of public opinion turned against companies with German roots. Ornamental iron fell out of favor as resources were diverted to support the war effort. A false wall was built in one of Braun’s warehouses to hide decorative ironwork that otherwise might have been destroyed.

Years later, the warehouse was torn down and the stockpile was discovered. According to former Metal Museum Director James Wallace, in the early 1970’s, Ernest Wiemann of Wiemann Iron Works in Tulsa, Oklahoma acquired a large collection of these historic products. In addition to using many of the original wrought iron in his own work, he made a large gift to the Metal Museum in 1975. The JG Braun ironwork has been part of the permanent collection ever since.

In 1996 JG Braun became a division of The Wagner Companies. It continues to provide ornamental metal products to the architectural metals industry.

    2010 Building Code Cycle

The ICC has just posted code proposals for review. Proposals have been made to eliminate the Type II definition for handrail, require a 1/8" radius on handrail edges, non-round handrail sections must have a minimum 1" cross section, and a reduction of the opening requirement in guards from its present 4 inches to 2-1/2 inches. There is also a code proposal to clarify the load requrirements for glass railing. Subscribe to our Blog to get the latest updates on code issues.

The full text of the proposals may be viewed at the ICC website. The first first code development hearing to review these proposals will be held in Baltimore, Maryland -- Oct. 24 to Nov. 11.

    ISO 9001:2008 Certified

Wagner is pleased to announce that we have received our ISO 9001:2008 Certification. Of particular pride is that Wagner received zero non-conformance during the audit and that Wagner's internal design process was included in the certification.

ISO 9001 is a family of standards for quality management systems. ISO 9001 is maintained by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization and is administered by accreditation and certification bodies.

Wagner pursued ISO 9001 certification in order to meet the requirements of many of our industrial customers. However, the lessons learned and the formalization of processes within Wagner have served to improve all facets of the Wagner organization.

ISO 9001 certification assures that Wagner customers will receive product that conforms to requirements, is dependable and reliable, and is available when needed.

How Much Railing Deflection is "Too Much"?

While the code bodies are clear on load requirements for guards and handrails, when it comes to allowable deflection, there has never been a clear answer to the question above.

In fact, the International Building Code (IBC) does not define allowable deflection in a railing. However, it must be kept in mind that while a railing can withstand a structural load requirement, the deflection may exceed an individual's perception of a safe railing.

American Standards and Testing of Materials (ASTM) E 985 the Standard Specification for Permanent Metal Railing Systems and Rails for Buildings, 7.2.2 states, "When the load is applied at the line of vertical support, the horizontal deflection shall not exceed the rail height (h) divided by 12, or h/12, with h being the distance between the surface of the post anchorage and the top of the top rail.” Per section 7.2.3, “When the load is applied at the mid span of the rail, the horizontal deflection shall not exceed the sum of the rail height (h) divided by 24 plus the rail length (l) between the vertical supports divided by 96, or h/24 + l/96. This would result in a 36 inch high rail being allowed to have a maximum deflection of 3 inches, and a 42 inch high rail being allowed to have an allowed deflection of 3.5 inches. These numbers seem excessive.

There is a great online article on this issue, Deflections in Deck and Balcony Railings written by Matthew T. Blackmer, M.S.C.E., P.E. and Edward L. Fronapfel, M.S.C.E., P.E., CFCC. After a review of various standards, they have come to the conclusion that deflection in a 36 inch high railing should be limited to 0.6 inches and 0.7 inches for a 42 inch high railing.

However, when all is said and done, there still is no definitive answer to this question and it is important to determine what is expected by the customer at the start to eliminate issues upon completion.

    ISO 9001:2008 Audit Completed

Following countless hours of preparation, Wagner is pleased to announce that we have completed our ISO audit. Wagner received a positive recommendation with zero non-conformance. Our official certificate should be in-hand by the end of this month.

ISO 9001 is a family of standards for quality management systems. ISO 9001 is maintained by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization and is administered by accreditation and certification bodies.

Some of the requirements in ISO 9001 include:

    • a set of procedures that cover all key processes at Wagner;
    • monitoring processes to ensure they are effective;
    • keeping adequate records;
    • checking output for defects, with appropriate and corrective action where necessary;
    • regularly reviewing individual processes and the quality system itself for effectiveness; and
    • facilitating continual improvement.

Is A Top Railing Required for Glass Railing?

This has become a very controversial issue with much confusion over interpretation. There are numerous glass railing installations without a rail on top of the glass. According to the ICC, this is not code compliant in a guard situation. However, as seen by the many existing applications, this is not being universally applied.

Here is the code reference in the International Building Code (IBC):

IBC 2407.1.2: Support. Each handrail or guard section shall be supported by a minimum of three glass balusters or shall be supported to remain in place should one baluster panel fail. Glass balusters shall not be installed without an attached handrail or guar

This wording was put into place to protect the public in the event of an individual panel's failure. In that situation, the remaining two glass balusters would remain in place to hold the railing and prevent people from falling.

This problem begins with the interpretation of glass balusters shall not be installed without an attached handrail or guard. Many installers -- and inspectors -- are taking this to mean that as long as a handrail is in place, the code has been met.

What is missing though is the limitation set out in the preceding paragraph of the code::

IBC 2407.1.1 Loads. The panels and their support system shall be designed to withstand the loads specified in section 1607.7. A safety factor of 4 shall be used.

Cross referencing to section IBC 1607.7 regarding design loads we find this:

IBC1607.7.1 Handrails and guards. Handrail assemblies and guards shall be designed to resist a load of 50 pounds per linear foot (pound per foot) (0.73 kN/m) applied in any direction at the top and to transfer this load through the supports to the structure. . .

IBC1607.7.1.1 Concentrated Load. Handrail assemblies and guards shall be able to resist a single concentrated load of 200 pounds (0.89kN), applied in any direction at any point along the top, and have attachment devices and supporting structure to transfer this loading to appropriate structural elements of the building. . .

    IBC1607.7
clearly states that the load must be met by the top of the guard (42 inches). Glass balusters will not be able to meet the 800 pound (4 times 200 pound) concentrated load without a cap rail.

Always check with your local code officials to confirm whether the specified designs will meet codes.

Update: The IBC has approved, for their 2009 publication, that no top rail is required if the balusters are laminated, tempered glass.

GlassWedgeTM and PanelGripTM -- Exclusively from Wagner

The latest development in Glass Railing technology, the Wagner PanelGrip™ facilitates the quick assembly of structural glass railing -- without messy fillers or special tools -- with significant savings in labor and shipping costs.

PanelGrip™ -- patent pending -- utilizes a unique, shoe moulding design that is 30% lighter than standard shoe with a mechanical locking mechanism that simplifies the process of glass railing installation. The system exceeds structural code requirements and has been extensively tested per ASTM E935, Standard Test Methods for Performance of Permanent Railing Systems and Rails for Buildings.

Additionally, Wagner is pleased to announce we are now the exclusive distributor of the GlassWedgeTM Dry Glaze System. GlassWedge permits the dry glazing of 1/2" or 3/4" tempered glass in standard shoe moulding. Glass and shoe moulding tolerances are critical -- Contact Wagner for information on dimensions if you are planning on using your own extrusion.

New Dry Glaze System for Glass Railing

The latest development in Glass Railing technology, the Wagner PanelGrip™ facilitates the quick assembly of structural glass railing -- without messy fillers or special tools -- with significant savings in labor and shipping costs.

PanelGrip™ -- patent pending -- utilizes a unique, light-weight shoe moulding design with a mechanical locking mechanism that simplifies the process of glass railing installation. The system exceeds structural code requirements and has been extensively tested per ASTM E935, Standard Test Methods for Performance of Permanent Railing Systems and Rails for Buildings.

Wagner expects to have sufficient product available for sale sometime in July. However, samples are available and will shipped upon request. If you would like a sample of Wagner's PanelGrip™ assembly, contact Wagner.

Raw Material Costs Continue to Rise

The demand for metals remains high and the costs continue to rise with the demand. Since January, Stainless steel has gone up 11%, aluminum is up 13%, bronze is up 18% and steel has gone up a whopping 54%.

Despite this, Wagner is being selective in implementing price increases -- in particular with Wagner standard products. Any price change will be solely based on the increase in cost in the metal content of a part.

However, please be aware of the current market conditions and note that a quote from Wagner does not hold the material for your order. The quoted price, material availability and lead time will be updated when your order is placed.

    Clarifying Handrail Clearance

Required clearance between a handrail and other building elements continues to confound and confuse. Here's a quick review of where present codes now stand.

The 1992 Americans With Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) stated that there was to be an absolute dimension of 1-1/2" between a handrail and a wall. This was actually a "grab bar" dimension which was part of an old version of ANSI A117.1. It's purpose was to avoid someone from getting caught between the wall and the handrail. ANSI changed the notation to 1-1/2" minimum in 1990.

This was not the case with ADAAG which took 12 years to be updated. The 2004 ADAAG -- presently still making its way through the Federal approval process -- now requires a 1-1/2" minimum, as does the ICC, IRC and ANSI A117.1. Though the original ADAAG is still being applied across the country, the Access Board's position is that the new ADAAG reflects their response to questions regarding accessibility and should supercede the 1992 guidelines.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) however is not on the same page with their requirements. Originally created as part of their building code -- NFPA 5000 -- but now included in NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, the NFPA requires a 2-1/4" clearance between the wall and the handrail. This may result in a railing that will be passed by the building inspector but is not accepted by the fire inspector.

Codes also generally require that there be a 1-1/2" clearance between the underside of the handrail and any obstruction -- including the horizontal bracket arm. There is an allowance however for variations in the handrail size -- for every 1/2" of additional perimeter dimension over 4", you may subtract 1/8" from the clearance requirement. For example:

    Outside Diameter
    Perimeter

    Subtract from
    1-1/2" Requirement

    Clearance From

    Climbability Study Completes Peer Review
After three years of review, the ICC Code Technology Committee (CTC) effectively put the climbable guard issue to rest by voting unanimously to accept a Final Report and recommend no further action on the issue. The decision took place during the CTC’s 15th meeting, which was held in Baltimore, MD, May 21–22, 2008.

In February 2007, the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA) commissioned the NAHB Research Center to conduct a comprehensive research study on the topic of “climbable guards.” The report was formerly released to the CTC in October 2007. In December, a Draft Final Report was issued, but the CTC said they were awaiting the results of a peer review before giving final approval. In the spring of 2008, NOMMA again retained the NAHB Research Center to oversee a review of the 116-page document, which was completed in April 2008.

The exhaustive peer review is now Appendix C of NOMMA’s official report, and adds an additional 60 pages to the document, which is officially titled “Review of Fall Safety of Children Between the Ages of 18 Months and 4 Years in Relation to Guards and Climbing in the Built Environment.” All documentation regarding this issue can be viewed at http://www.iccsafe.org/cs/cc/ctc/Climbable.html.

While the CTC’s recent vote effectively ends the climbable guard review by the ICC, it is important to note that the issue may resurface in future code proposals. However, the CTC’s final vote and the public release of NOMMA’s study will provide important tools for responding to any future climbability proposals.

THE BLIND MEN AND THE ELEPHANT

In the parable of the blind men and the elephant, five blind men come across an elephant and decide to feel it to determine what sort of creature it is. They conclude that an elephant is like a wall, a snake, a tree, a fan, or a rope depending on where they touch. All are correct, yet none are complete.

The same can be said about Wagner. Are we a railing component and system supplier or a manufacturer; a tube and pipe bender or a stamping house; a waterjet cutting operation or a polisher; an architectural metal company or an industrial metal company? All are correct, yet none are complete.

As our customer base expands and becomes more diverse, Wagner understands the need to remain flexible and continuously improve all elements of Wagner's operation and production. With this in mind, we are well into a company-wide Business Process Excellence program as we work toward ISO compliance during the coming year.

One element of this program is a measure of customer satisfaction. Please take a moment to answer 5 quick questions about your experience with Wagner. Click here to go to our survey.

WHAT DOES COPPER HAVE TO DO WITH THE FLU?

Stainless steel has always been the metal of choice in hospital and food service applications. However, recent tests have shown that copper and its alloys (i.e., bronze and brass) have natural antimicrobial and self-decontaminating properties and may make them better suited for use on touch surfaces that are potential reservoirs of infection. Studies have shown that copper, brass and bronze can quickly and efficiently eradicate several different pathogens -- including E. coli and MRSA -- which are the source of many hospital acquired infections.

To view more information on this ongoing study, check out the Copper Development Association's website.

WORKING TO IMPROVE YOUR ORDER PROCESS

Help us to help you by completing our online Customer Satisfaction Survey. All responses are anonymous. No personal information will be collected. Click here to go to the survey.

With the continuing diversification of Wagner's product line and the ever-expanding reach of our web sites, the profile of the traditional Wagner customer has changed and now includes designers and many who are in need of more assistance in the proper specification and selection of architectural metal products than has been the case in the past.

Wagner customer service representatives (CSRs) are well trained in providing pricing and entering orders, but with 11,000 part numbers, they may not have all the answers to the technical challenges of callers. In order to meet this growing demand, we have created links on our web site which send e-mails to our Technical Resource Team. With one click, your question is forwarded to a cross-section of Wagner's engineers, customer service and technical experts. Responses are sent within 24 hours and most are often resolved the same day.

The questions we receive are also being assembled into a "knowledge base" that will eventually be incorporated into our web sites. Our plan is to have this software in place by the second quarter of 2008.

In the meantime, here are a few tips on using our web sites:

To assist you in the use of shopwagner.com, view our online instructions.

If you prefer speaking with a real-live person, that's fine too. Wagner is just completing the implementation of new CSR order entry software to significantly improve your call-in experience. In order to help the CSRs in assisting you, please have your catalog and questions handy.

FINAL DRAFT OF CLIMBABLE GUARD REVIEW

NAHB Research Center Presents Findings to CTC

The long awaited report from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center was presented as a final draft to the International Code Council's (ICC) Code Technology Committee (CTC) on October 5, 2007 in Reno, Nevada.

The report is titled Review of Fall Safety of Children Between the Ages of 18 Months and 4 Years in Relation to Guards and Climbing in the Built Environment. Funded by the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA), the study was commissioned as a means of clarifying conflicting interpretations of guard climbing studies and injury data.

Over 40 peer-reviewed studies were examined for the report covering the areas of children's physical development and their interaction with the built environment. The review of the studies resulted in this set of conclusions:

    • "The human child is built to climb and loves to do so!" (Readdick and Park, 1998).
    • Climbing is involved in the child's physical, psychological and social development.
    • Climbing skills are often taught and encouraged by parents, especially with boys.
    • Climbing is a part of physical education at school.
    • No evidence of a gender difference in either climbing skill or climbing speed in young children.
    • Difficult barrier designs merely present a greater challenge to the determined child.
    • Studies also generally agree that it is probably impossible and most likely undesirable to render any environment completely "safe" from children's climbing

The NAHB Research Center's review went on to analyze Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) data collected by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). Previous analysis of this data had been unscientific and inconclusive. Following a thorough, scientific analysis, the review of NEISS data resulted in the following conclusions:

    • The results indicate that falls from Porches, Balconies, Open-Side Floors, Floor Openings Handrails, Railings, Banisters among young children aged 18 months to 4 years account for an estimated 0.032 percent of injuries in that population.
    • The incident rate is approximately 2.5 per 100,000 children between 18 months and 4 years of age
    • There is much uncertainty in the data to ascribe causality or the physical situation that lead to reported injuries.

In their discussion following the presentation, the CTC felt that the .032 percent rate of injury was too small -- especially when compared to other products -- to warrant the creation of code language. They voted unanimously to prepare a draft conclusion for submission to the ICC that will be finalized once the NAHB Research Center document completes the peer review process. If all goes as planned, the peer review should be completed in the next four months.

The CTC made a point of thanking NOMMA and its members for having kept their promise by providing a well-documented report that has answered their many questions regarding this long-standing controversy.

CONFUSION OVER THE LADDER EFFECT CONTINUES

The 2000 International Residential Code (IRC) states that guards . . . shall not be constructed with horizontal members or other ornamental pattern that results in a ladder effect. It has never been in the International Building Code (IBC).

This wording was deleted in the 2001 IRC supplement and is not in the 2003 or the 2006 IRC or IBC model codes. Despite this, many believe that this guard limitation is the standard throughout the country.

Due to the continuing controversy and confusion on guard climbability, the International Code Council (ICC) Board requested that the Code Technology Committee (CTC) examine the issue. In July 2005, the CTC formed the Guard Study Group. One of the early acknowledgements by the study group was that not enough data existed to definitively support either side of the debate. That being the case, the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA) Education Foundation agreed to fund a research study by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center to review all existing studies and case histories to determine whether a problem exists that would require code restrictions. The NAHB Research Center report is due out in the near future.

Wagner offers an AIA CEU program titled, The Myth of the Ladder Effect and other Railing Code Issues. If you are interested in a "Lunch-and-Learn" featuring this program, contact Wagner.

Wagner -- along with our trade associations the National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers (NAAMM) and NOMMA -- remains active in this process and will provide updates as we hear of them.

    NEW AUTOMATIC TUBE POLISHER

The Wagner Companies has added a long length automatic tube polisher to our manufacturing operation for circumferential finishing of stainless steel pipe, tube or solid round bar.

The machine has four heads and is capable of automatically feeding 21 foot lengths of material with an outside diameter between 1 and 9 inches at a rate of approximately 4 feet per minute.

The machine's multiple heads allow up to four different abrasive operations to run in one pass providing a consistent texture and surface appearance. The desired finish can be specified by a belt finish designation – 240-grit or 320-grit finishes – or by common mechanical finishing terms – #4 or #6 satin finishes – to match other fittings and components.

Wagner estimates the automatic tube polisher will shorten lead times for circumferentially polished long length material significantly allowing for fast turnaround and better consistency.

    STRAIT-O-FLEX

Exclusively from Wagner, the Strait-O-Flex is portable and simple to use. Weighing only 22 pounds, the Strait-O-Flex can be readily taken out in the field and used in any position. Yet its multiple uses also make it an excellent tool for stationary mounting in the shop.

Work to be straightened or curved is set on the two adjustable support blocks and pressure is applied via the lever. The lever acts on an eccentric shaft and roller-bearing mounted pressure roll to apply five tons of pressure with minimal effort.

Use the Strait-O-Flex for straightening stringers, floor gratings, plates, channel door frames, pipe, bars or angles that have been deformed during welding or punching.

The Strait-O-Flex may be used for large radius bending of pipe, bars, handrail moulding, tubing, and small angles or channels.

    PURE IRON

    Now in Stock!

Pure Iron is a high-purity iron that is very ductile and the preferred material for forging and decorative metal work. While very popular in the first half of the 20th century, its use was reduced by the development of new steel alloys and high production costs. Eventually, a point was reached where there was no longer a domestic source for this material.

In response to requests from our customers, Wagner has decided to import Pure Iron from Europe for distribution in the U.S.

Samples were on-hand for MetalFab 2006 in Savannah, GA. and the ABANA conference in Seattle, WA.  At the NOMMA meeting, legendary artisan Uri Hofi used a sample of Wagner's Pure Iron during his Big Blu Hammer demo. The leaf shown on this page was the result -- in one heat with no cracking.

To see what sizes are available, go to www.shopwagner.com.

By the way, that leaf in the photo was made from 1-1/8" bar and is 5-1/2" wide by 9" long.

HAVE YOU GOTTEN A WAGNER CUSTOMER NUMBER

On October 30, Wagner will institute a tiered pricing system which differentiates between customers with a Wagner customer number and those that do not. Non-Wagner customers will pay a 10% premium on all Wagner manufactured products -- i.e. handrail brackets, flanges, ells, disks and end caps.

When you call Wagner for pricing or to place an order, our customer service reps will confirm your information so that you receive the appropriate pricing.

If you use www.shopwagner.com, you must log-in to view your price -- the non-Wagner customer price will be displayed for comparison. If you do not log-in, you will only see the MSRP on our standard products.. If you have not yet created a shopwagner user id and password, click here.

    'TIS THE SEASON

With Halloween this week and Thanksgiving only a few weeks away, can the next big holiday be too far behind? That's right it's almost time for Festivus!

The Festivus celebration was made famous in a December 1997 episode of the television program “Seinfeld” titled “The Strike”. In that episode, the fictional Frank Costanza, played by Jerry Stiller, tells of how he invented the holiday when his children were young and he found himself in a department store tug-of-war with another Christmas shopper for a doll. “I realized there had to be a better way,” Frank recounts.

According to Mr. Costanza, the Festivus tradition begins with a bare aluminum pole, which Frank praises for its "very high strength-to-weight ratio." The unadorned aluminum pole is displayed in opposition to the commercialization of highly decorated Christmas trees, and because the holiday's creator, Frank Costanza, "find[s] tinsel distracting."

In 2005, The Wagner Companies decided to have a little fun and we began to produce Festivus Poles using aluminum pipe with a manufactured base and sell them online at www.festivuspoles.com. The rest, as they say, is history. 2005 Sales were beyond expectations and the web site received close to 100,000 visits in the period leading up to the Dec. 23rd holiday.

Was 2005 a fluke and will 2006 be a bust? Too soon to tell but if we and our customers have as much fun with this fictional celebration as last year, we will consider it a success.

    RISE/RUN ANGLE CALCULATOR

Need to determine a stair angle without resorting to trigonometry? Wagner now has an online Stair Angle Calculator. Enter the rise and run (or rises and tread depth) to determine your stair angle. You can view this tool byclicking here.

    INDUCTION BENDING

Induction Bending is accomplished by heating the material and forcing the bend to a preset radius. Since no special tooling is required, induction bending is a precise and cost-effective method of custom bending pipe or tube for architectural, industrial, commercial and specialty applications in small or large quantities.

    • Bend any center line radius between 12" and 48".
    • For tube sizes from 1.50" through 5.00" OD.
    • Wall thick nesses of .120" or greater work best.
    • Can be bent up to 180 degrees.

    WAGNER 2007 CATALOG

The Wagner Companies has begun circulation of our 2007 master catalog.  The 2007 edition is Wagner's largest and most comprehensive catalog ever.  It includes all railing systems, products and services available from the R & B Wagner railing component product line and the J.G. Braun ornamental metal line in one 280-page directory of over 7,800 standard catalog items.

The Wagner Companies 2007 catalog introduces the Wagnerail™ Railing System with Aluminum and Stainless Steel components and assemblies that are unique to Wagner and multiple infill options of glass, Ultra-Tec® Cable Railing, 3form Ecoresin™ panels or Archimesh™ Stainless Steel Wire Woven Mesh panels.  All of these can also be lit using components from Wagner’s Lumenrail® system.

The catalog provides complete information on all Wagner railing systems – spiral stairs, cable railing, glass railing – and railing components – connectors, flanges, slip-on fittings, balusters, handrail, brackets, architectural shapes and stamped ornaments.  The new catalog also includes an expanded technical information section that provides installation instructions and current code summaries.

If you have not received a copy or would like additional copies for your office, contact Wagner.

RAW MATERIAL COSTS CONTINUE TO RISE

Starting in mid-2006 Wagner has seen a substantial increase in raw material costs for aluminum, bronze and stainless steel. During the past 12 months, stainless steel costs have doubled!

The increase in stainless steel prices are a result of the increased cost of nickel and the large demand brought about by those building new ethanol production plants. In addition to this resulting in cost increases, it also redirects the attention of suppliers away from the needs of the architectural metal trades and towards construction.

Wagner's present challenge is in finding raw materials that meet our high quality standards. If we reject material for quality our vendors report that they can easily sell it to others who are just happy to get it. Additionally, lead times are 16 to 20 weeks from the mills – some dates are even further out.

With this is mind, quoting these materials to you has become impossible to predict. As such, please be aware that quotes for custom materials are only in effect at the time the quote is presented.

Please be aware of the current market conditions and note that a quote from Wagner does not hold the material for your order.  The quoted price, material availability and lead time will be updated when your order is placed.

The following graph shows the increase in our Stainless Steel costs over the since September of 2005.

Due to this increase in raw materials, we have increased pricing on our stainless steel catalog items. Wagner will continue to monitor costs and do our best to hold prices on our standard products.
