New Dry Glaze System for Glass Railing |
|
The latest development in Glass Railing technology, the Wagner PanelGrip™ facilitates the quick assembly of structural glass railing -- without messy fillers or special tools -- with significant savings in labor and shipping costs.
PanelGrip™ -- patent pending -- utilizes a unique, light-weight shoe moulding design with a mechanical locking mechanism that simplifies the process of glass railing installation. The system exceeds structural code requirements and has been extensively tested per ASTM E935, Standard Test Methods for Performance of Permanent Railing Systems and Rails for Buildings.
Wagner expects to have sufficient product available for sale sometime in July. However, samples are available and will shipped upon request. If you would like a sample of Wagner's PanelGrip™ assembly, contact Wagner. |

Raw Material Costs Continue to Rise |
|
The demand for metals remains high and the costs continue to rise with the demand. Since January, Stainless steel has gone up 11%, aluminum is up 13%, bronze is up 18% and steel has gone up a whopping 54%.
Despite this, Wagner is being selective in implementing price increases -- in particular with Wagner standard products. Any price change will be solely based on the increase in cost in the metal content of a part.
However, please be aware of the current market conditions and note that a quote from Wagner does not hold the material for your order. The quoted price, material availability and lead time will be updated when your order is placed. |

Clarifying Handrail Clearance |
|
Required clearance between a handrail and other building elements continues to confound and confuse. Here's a quick review of where present codes now stand.
The 1992 Americans With Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) stated that there was to be an absolute dimension of 1-1/2" between a handrail and a wall. This was actually a "grab bar" dimension which was part of an old version of ANSI A117.1. It's purpose was to avoid someone from getting caught between the wall and the handrail. ANSI changed the notation to 1-1/2" minimum in 1990.
This was not the case with ADAAG which took 12 years to be updated. The 2004 ADAAG -- presently still making its way through the Federal approval process -- now requires a 1-1/2" minimum, as does the ICC, IRC and ANSI A117.1. Though the original ADAAG is still being applied across the country, the Access Board's position is that the new ADAAG reflects their response to questions regarding accessibility and should supercede the 1992 guidelines.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) however is not on the same page with their requirements. Originally created as part of their building code -- NFPA 5000 -- but now included in NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, the NFPA requires a 2-1/4" clearance between the wall and the handrail. This may result in a railing that will be passed by the building inspector but is not accepted by the fire inspector.
Codes also generally require that there be a 1-1/2" clearance between the underside of the handrail and any obstruction -- including the horizontal bracket arm. There is an allowance however for variations in the handrail size -- for every 1/2" of additional perimeter dimension over 4", you may subtract 1/8" from the clearance requirement. For example:
|

|

Climbability Study Completes Peer Review |
After three years of review, the ICC Code Technology Committee (CTC) effectively put the climbable guard issue to rest by voting unanimously to accept a Final Report and recommend no further action on the issue. The decision took place during the CTC’s 15th meeting, which was held in Baltimore, MD, May 21–22, 2008.
In February 2007, the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA) commissioned the NAHB Research Center to conduct a comprehensive research study on the topic of “climbable guards.” The report was formerly released to the CTC in October 2007. In December, a Draft Final Report was issued, but the CTC said they were awaiting the results of a peer review before giving final approval. In the spring of 2008, NOMMA again retained the NAHB Research Center to oversee a review of the 116-page document, which was completed in April 2008.
The exhaustive peer review is now Appendix C of NOMMA’s official report, and adds an additional 60 pages to the document, which is officially titled “Review of Fall Safety of Children Between the Ages of 18 Months and 4 Years in Relation to Guards and Climbing in the Built Environment.” All documentation regarding this issue can be viewed at http://www.iccsafe.org/cs/cc/ctc/Climbable.html.
While the CTC’s recent vote effectively ends the climbable guard review by the ICC, it is important to note that the issue may resurface in future code proposals. However, the CTC’s final vote and the public release of NOMMA’s study will provide important tools for responding to any future climbability proposals.

THE BLIND MEN AND THE ELEPHANT |
|
In the parable of the blind men and the elephant, five blind men come across an elephant and decide to feel it to determine what sort of creature it is. They conclude that an elephant is like a wall, a snake, a tree, a fan, or a rope depending on where they touch. All are correct, yet none are complete.
The same can be said about Wagner. Are we a railing component and system supplier or a manufacturer; a tube and pipe bender or a stamping house; a waterjet cutting operation or a polisher; an architectural metal company or an industrial metal company? All are correct, yet none are complete.
As our customer base expands and becomes more diverse, Wagner understands the need to remain flexible and continuously improve all elements of Wagner's operation and production. With this in mind, we are well into a company-wide Business Process Excellence program as we work toward ISO compliance during the coming year.
One element of this program is a measure of customer satisfaction. Please take a moment to answer 5 quick questions about your experience with Wagner. Click here to go to our survey. |

WHAT DOES COPPER HAVE TO DO WITH THE FLU? |
|
Stainless steel has always been the metal of choice in hospital and food service applications. However, recent tests have shown that copper and its alloys (i.e., bronze and brass) have natural antimicrobial and self-decontaminating properties and may make them better suited for use on touch surfaces that are potential reservoirs of infection. Studies have shown that copper, brass and bronze can quickly and efficiently eradicate several different pathogens -- including E. coli and MRSA -- which are the source of many hospital acquired infections.
To view more information on this ongoing study, check out the Copper Development Association's website. |

WORKING TO IMPROVE YOUR ORDER PROCESS |
|
Help us to help you by completing our online Customer Satisfaction Survey. All responses are anonymous. No personal information will be collected. Click here to go to the survey.
With the continuing diversification of Wagner's product line and the ever-expanding reach of our web sites, the profile of the traditional Wagner customer has changed and now includes designers and many who are in need of more assistance in the proper specification and selection of architectural metal products than has been the case in the past.
Wagner customer service representatives (CSRs) are well trained in providing pricing and entering orders, but with 11,000 part numbers, they may not have all the answers to the technical challenges of callers. In order to meet this growing demand, we have created links on our web site which send e-mails to our Technical Resource Team. With one click, your question is forwarded to a cross-section of Wagner's engineers, customer service and technical experts. Responses are sent within 24 hours and most are often resolved the same day.
The questions we receive are also being assembled into a "knowledge base" that will eventually be incorporated into our web sites. Our plan is to have this software in place by the second quarter of 2008.
|
In the meantime, here are a few tips on using our web sites: |
-
-
-
If you have a list of part numbers ready for ordering, shopwagner.com has a line item entry tool for quick order entry.
-
-
While still being beta tested, our online configurators are a great way to experiment with your design and obtain quick pricing.
-
To assist you in the use of shopwagner.com, view our online instructions. |
If you prefer speaking with a real-live person, that's fine too. Wagner is just completing the implementation of new CSR order entry software to significantly improve your call-in experience. In order to help the CSRs in assisting you, please have your catalog and questions handy.

FINAL DRAFT OF CLIMBABLE GUARD REVIEW |
|
NAHB Research Center Presents Findings to CTC |
|
The long awaited report from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center was presented as a final draft to the International Code Council's (ICC) Code Technology Committee (CTC) on October 5, 2007 in Reno, Nevada.
The report is titled Review of Fall Safety of Children Between the Ages of 18 Months and 4 Years in Relation to Guards and Climbing in the Built Environment. Funded by the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA), the study was commissioned as a means of clarifying conflicting interpretations of guard climbing studies and injury data.
Over 40 peer-reviewed studies were examined for the report covering the areas of children's physical development and their interaction with the built environment. The review of the studies resulted in this set of conclusions:
-
"The human child is built to climb and loves to do so!" (Readdick and Park, 1998).
-
Climbing is involved in the child's physical, psychological and social development.
-
Climbing skills are often taught and encouraged by parents, especially with boys.
-
Climbing is a part of physical education at school.
-
No evidence of a gender difference in either climbing skill or climbing speed in young children.
-
Difficult barrier designs merely present a greater challenge to the determined child.
-
Studies also generally agree that it is probably impossible and most likely undesirable to render any environment completely "safe" from children's climbing
The NAHB Research Center's review went on to analyze Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) data collected by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). Previous analysis of this data had been unscientific and inconclusive. Following a thorough, scientific analysis, the review of NEISS data resulted in the following conclusions:
-
The results indicate that falls from Porches, Balconies, Open-Side Floors, Floor Openings Handrails, Railings, Banisters among young children aged 18 months to 4 years account for an estimated 0.032 percent of injuries in that population.
-
The incident rate is approximately 2.5 per 100,000 children between 18 months and 4 years of age
-
There is much uncertainty in the data to ascribe causality or the physical situation that lead to reported injuries.
In their discussion following the presentation, the CTC felt that the .032 percent rate of injury was too small -- especially when compared to other products -- to warrant the creation of code language. They voted unanimously to prepare a draft conclusion for submission to the ICC that will be finalized once the NAHB Research Center document completes the peer review process. If all goes as planned, the peer review should be completed in the next four months.
The CTC made a point of thanking NOMMA and its members for having kept their promise by providing a well-documented report that has answered their many questions regarding this long-standing controversy.

CONFUSION OVER THE LADDER EFFECT CONTINUES
The 2000 International Residential Code (IRC) states that guards . . . shall not be constructed with horizontal members or other ornamental pattern that results in a ladder effect. It has never been in the International Building Code (IBC).
This wording was deleted in the 2001 IRC supplement and is not in the 2003 or the 2006 IRC or IBC model codes. Despite this, many believe that this guard limitation is the standard throughout the country.
Due to the continuing controversy and confusion on guard climbability, the International Code Council (ICC) Board requested that the Code Technology Committee (CTC) examine the issue. In July 2005, the CTC formed the Guard Study Group. One of the early acknowledgements by the study group was that not enough data existed to definitively support either side of the debate. That being the case, the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA) Education Foundation agreed to fund a research study by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center to review all existing studies and case histories to determine whether a problem exists that would require code restrictions. The NAHB Research Center report is due out in the near future.
Wagner offers an AIA CEU program titled, The Myth of the Ladder Effect and other Railing Code Issues. If you are interested in a "Lunch-and-Learn" featuring this program, contact Wagner.
Wagner -- along with our trade associations the National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers (NAAMM) and NOMMA -- remains active in this process and will provide updates as we hear of them.

NEW AUTOMATIC TUBE POLISHER
The Wagner Companies has added a long length automatic tube polisher to our manufacturing operation for circumferential finishing of stainless steel pipe, tube or solid round bar.
The machine has four heads and is capable of automatically feeding 21 foot lengths of material with an outside diameter between 1 and 9 inches at a rate of approximately 4 feet per minute.
The machine's multiple heads allow up to four different abrasive operations to run in one pass providing a consistent texture and surface appearance. The desired finish can be specified by a belt finish designation – 240-grit or 320-grit finishes – or by common mechanical finishing terms – #4 or #6 satin finishes – to match other fittings and components.
Wagner estimates the automatic tube polisher will shorten lead times for circumferentially polished long length material significantly allowing for fast turnaround and better consistency.
|
|
STRAIT-O-FLEX
Exclusively from Wagner, the Strait-O-Flex is portable and simple to use. Weighing only 22 pounds, the Strait-O-Flex can be readily taken out in the field and used in any position. Yet its multiple uses also make it an excellent tool for stationary mounting in the shop.
Work to be straightened or curved is set on the two adjustable support blocks and pressure is applied via the lever. The lever acts on an eccentric shaft and roller-bearing mounted pressure roll to apply five tons of pressure with minimal effort.
Use the Strait-O-Flex for straightening stringers, floor gratings, plates, channel door frames, pipe, bars or angles that have been deformed during welding or punching.
The Strait-O-Flex may be used for large radius bending of pipe, bars, handrail moulding, tubing, and small angles or channels.

RAW MATERIAL COSTS CONTINUE TO RISE
Starting in mid-2006 Wagner has seen a substantial increase in raw material costs for aluminum, bronze and stainless steel. During the past 12 months, stainless steel costs have doubled!
The increase in stainless steel prices are a result of the increased cost of nickel and the large demand brought about by those building new ethanol production plants. In addition to this resulting in cost increases, it also redirects the attention of suppliers away from the needs of the architectural metal trades and towards construction.
Wagner's present challenge is in finding raw materials that meet our high quality standards. If we reject material for quality our vendors report that they can easily sell it to others who are just happy to get it. Additionally, lead times are 16 to 20 weeks from the mills – some dates are even further out.
With this is mind, quoting these materials to you has become impossible to predict. As such, please be aware that quotes for custom materials are only in effect at the time the quote is presented.
Please be aware of the current market conditions and note that a quote from Wagner does not hold the material for your order. The quoted price, material availability and lead time will be updated when your order is placed.
The following graph shows the increase in our Stainless Steel costs over the since September of 2005.
Due to this increase in raw materials, we have increased pricing on our stainless steel catalog items. Wagner will continue to monitor costs and do our best to hold prices on our standard products. |

PURE IRON
Now in Stock!
Pure Iron is a high-purity iron that is very ductile and the preferred material for forging and decorative metal work. While very popular in the first half of the 20th century, its use was reduced by the development of new steel alloys and high production costs. Eventually, a point was reached where there was no longer a domestic source for this material.
In response to requests from our customers, Wagner has decided to import Pure Iron from Europe for distribution in the U.S.
Samples were on-hand for MetalFab 2006 in Savannah, GA. and the ABANA conference in Seattle, WA. At the NOMMA meeting, legendary artisan Uri Hofi used a sample of Wagner's Pure Iron during his Big Blu Hammer demo. The leaf shown on this page was the result -- in one heat with no cracking.
To see what sizes are available, go to www.shopwagner.com.
By the way, that leaf in the photo was made from 1-1/8" bar and is 5-1/2" wide by 9" long. |

HAVE YOU GOTTEN A WAGNER CUSTOMER NUMBER
On October 30, Wagner will institute a tiered pricing system which differentiates between customers with a Wagner customer number and those that do not. Non-Wagner customers will pay a 10% premium on all Wagner manufactured products -- i.e. handrail brackets, flanges, ells, disks and end caps.
When you call Wagner for pricing or to place an order, our customer service reps will confirm your information so that you receive the appropriate pricing.
If you use www.shopwagner.com, you must log-in to view your price -- the non-Wagner customer price will be displayed for comparison. If you do not log-in, you will only see the MSRP on our standard products.. If you have not yet created a shopwagner user id and password, click here. |

'TIS THE SEASON
With Halloween this week and Thanksgiving only a few weeks away, can the next big holiday be too far behind? That's right it's almost time for Festivus!
The Festivus celebration was made famous in a December 1997 episode of the television program “Seinfeld” titled “The Strike”. In that episode, the fictional Frank Costanza, played by Jerry Stiller, tells of how he invented the holiday when his children were young and he found himself in a department store tug-of-war with another Christmas shopper for a doll. “I realized there had to be a better way,” Frank recounts.
According to Mr. Costanza, the Festivus tradition begins with a bare aluminum pole, which Frank praises for its "very high strength-to-weight ratio." The unadorned aluminum pole is displayed in opposition to the commercialization of highly decorated Christmas trees, and because the holiday's creator, Frank Costanza, "find[s] tinsel distracting."
In 2005, The Wagner Companies decided to have a little fun and we began to produce Festivus Poles using aluminum pipe with a manufactured base and sell them online at www.festivuspoles.com. The rest, as they say, is history. 2005 Sales were beyond expectations and the web site received close to 100,000 visits in the period leading up to the Dec. 23rd holiday.
Was 2005 a fluke and will 2006 be a bust? Too soon to tell but if we and our customers have as much fun with this fictional celebration as last year, we will consider it a success.
