Our recommended cable for most applications is 1x19 construction, type 316 stainless steel cable.
Other constructions of cable can be used, such as 7x7 or 7x19, but they are rarely recommended.
| Cable Construction Type 316 Stainless Steel is used, unless otherwise specified. |
- To minimize deflection, cable needs to be:
- As rigid as possible and
- Resistant to stretch under load. Cable stretch is undesirable, and the longer the cable runs between terminals the more it will stretch as it is tensioned.
| |
| Cable Construction |
Characteristics |
1 x 19 |
Very rigid. Lowest stretching under load. 1 x 19 is the preferred construction for cable railings, under most circumstances. |
7 x 7 |
Less rigid than 1 x 19. |
May have application where sharp bends are involved and on shorter runs where stretch is a negligible factor. (Not readily available in left hand lay.) |
7 x 19 |
Less rigid than 7 x 7 | |
Cable Applications |
Cable Dia. |
Typical Applications |
1/8"* |
Can be used on horizontal railings where there is little or no pedestrian traffic or where railing does not need to meet code requirements (such as where there is little or no drop off). Can be used on vertical railings, which are not as susceptible to heavy shock loads as horizontal railings. |
3/16" |
Most commonly used diameter for pedestrian railings. |
¼" |
Diameters larger than 3/16" can be used where a larger diameter is desirable from a visual/aesthetics standpoint. |
5/16" |
3/8" | |
*1/8" diameter cable can be vulnerable to failure under shock loads caused by abuse, such as a heavy person applying an out of plane load on a properly tensioned cable. 3/16" and larger cable diameters have significantly higher load ratings than 1/8" and are, therefore, not as susceptible to failure as 1/8".

Invisiware® Radius Ferrules
- Stainless Steel, Type 316
- Must be swaged onto only one end of the cable.
- Available pre-swaged with pre-cut cable. Contact Wagner with your cable run requirements for pricing.
- See Tools if you wish to do your own swaging.
- Not an adjuster, Use Invisiware® Receiver or Adjust-A-Jaw Tensioner® for adjusting tension.
| |
The Invisiware® Radius Ferrule is designed to be hidden within the end post. Only the head will be exposed outside of the post. The head area is a domeshaped end that is larger than the body of the ferrule and acts as a shoulder to support the tension of the cable.
The Radius Ferrule is swaged onto the end of the cable. It is not an adjuster. An Invisiware® Receiver or Adjust-A-Jaw Tensioner® should be used on the other end for adjustment.
Pipe end posts are counterbored to receive the head and to minimize its exposure on the outside of the post. On flat-sided end posts, the head rests flush against the surface of the post.
We include a plastic washer to act as a scratch resistant barrier between the head of the radius ferrule and the surface of the post.
- NOTES:
- This part is designed for use on pipe and square tube railing only. It should not be specified for 3" x 1" and 2" x 1" double end post construction railings.
- If you choose to go with pre-cut and pre-swaged cable, your cable braces or intermediate posts wil require a larger hole to accomodate the Swaging Studs and Ferrules.

The Invisiware® Receiver is designed to be used with our swaging stud. When the appropriate receiver is selected for a particular type and size of end post, the result is a tensioning mechanism that is hidden within the end post itself. Only the head area of the receiver will be exposed outside of the post. The head area is the domed shaped end of the receiver that is larger than the body of the receiver. It acts as a shoulder to support the tension of the cable as it is tightened. The outside of the domed head is broached with a hex broach to accept an Allen wrench to tension the cable.
Pipe end posts are counterbored to receive the head and to minimize its exposure on the outside of the post. On flat-sided end posts, the head rests flush against the surface of the post. The Invisiware Receiver can be used on stair pitches up to approximately 35º without drilling end posts on an angle. We include a plastic washer to act as a scratch resistant barrier between the head of the receiver and the surface of the post.

The Swaging Stud is used in conjunction with an Invisiware® Receiver or Welded Receiver. This fitting provides a means of tensioning a cable in as small an area as is feasible. The threaded surface of the stud is treated with a moly-based surface treatment that is baked on. This will prevent thread galling and sticking under extreme loads and environments. |

Adjust-A-Jaw® Tensioners Clevis Style
- Stainless Steel, Type 316
- Available pre-swaged with pre-cut cable. Contact Wagner with your cable run requirements for pricing.
- See Tools if you wish to do your own swaging.
The Adjust-A-Jaw™ Tensioner is a clevis style fitting that provides a considerable amount of take-up.
The Adjust-A-Jaw tensioner has four different elements: the Clevis; the Body; the Lock Nut; and the Swaging Ferrule. |
The Clevis has a male thread that mates with a female thread within the Body. The Lock Nut locks the male thread into place against the Body after the assembly is properly tensioned. When the Swaging Ferrule is swaged onto the cable, it holds the Body to the cable while also allowing the Body to rotate on the cable during tensioning.
The Adjust-A-Jaw Tensioner is the most streamlined clevis style adjusting mechanism available for its stated cable size. It is ideally suited for stair pitches and is also a very attractive fitting if you want the “high-tech” look of exposed stainless steel hardware on level runs as well as on stairways.

WELDED RECEIVER
The Welded Receiver is actually a frame component. The Welded Receiver is used much the same as an Invisiware® Receiver and Stud, except that the Welded Receiver does not provide for any take-up adjustment after the Stud is installed into it.
The Welded Receiver is cut to the required length and welded into the outside wall of an end post.
After the Welded Receiver is welded, the surface that is welded is ground to the original contour, thus hiding the weld. |
| |
The female thread within the Welded Receiver accommodates our Swaging Stud. This arrangement creates a completely hidden end post fitting, and when combined with an Invisiware® Receiver and Stud on the opposite end of the same cable, makes up our most streamlined combination of hardware. | |

Ultra-Tec® Fixed Jaw and Clip-on Fixed Jaw

- Stainless Steel, Type 316
- Available pre-swaged with pre-cut cable. Contact Wagner with your cable run requirements for pricing.
- See Tools if you wish to do your own swaging.
The Fixed Jaw is similar in appearance to the Adjust-A-Jaw® Tensioner, while being less expensive than an Adjust-A-Jaw®. The Fixed Jaw does not allow for any adjustment. The Fixed Jaw should be used on one end, and an Adjust-A-Jaw® on the other end of a cable. This fitting is especially suited to uses on stair pitches, as it will automatically assume the correct pitch of the stair when the cable is tensioned. |
| The Fixed Jaw is the shortest and most streamlined clevis fitting that is available for its stated cable size. While it is ideally suited for stair pitches, it also is a very attractive fitting to use if you want the ”high-tech” look of exposed stainless steel hardware on level runs as well as on stair pitches. The Fixed Jaw is held onto the cable by our Swaging Ferrule. The Swaging Ferrule fits into the counterbore of the Fixed Jaw after the Swaging Ferrule is attached. | | |

Cable Grommets
Cable Grommets are available for popular cable diameters of 3/16" and 1/4", to help prevent rust in exterior or other applications where moisture is a factor. Cable Grommets prevent abrasion to the inside surface of the holes through which the cable is drawn as it is installed in the railing frame. This can make a big difference in the appearance of the railing after a few years.
Cable Grommets are installed into holes in intermediate posts, cable braces and, in the case of the Radius Ferrule, into the end post holes through which thecable exits. They are installed after the paint or powder coating is applied and before the cables are installed. Cable Grommets are available in black UV resistant HDPE. |
Order Cable Gormmets by diameter of cable and post through which the cable will be drawn. Packaged in quantities of 100, 500 and 1,000 of each part number.
